Singer-songwriter and rapper King is known for earworms like “Maan Meri Jaan” and “Tu Aake Dekhle”, but what does his writing process look like? Did he have any other dreams growing up, or was music his be-all? He sat down with Billboard India to answer these questions, and more, sent in by his fans.
One fan from Karnal asked him for advice for rappers just starting out. “Just drop it. And keep dropping it. Ye mat soch ke drop karna ke koi bada sun le. Aisi taisi un sabki. Itne nikaalo ke sunna hi pade kissi ko [Don’t drop it hoping for someone big to listen to it. Leave them all. Release so many [tracks] that someone is compelled to listen],” was his advice to Nitin.
Another one from Mumbai wanted to know what inspired him to take up singing professionally knowing how competitive the music industry is in India. “Competition sochke shuru hi nahi kiya na kuch karna [I didn’t think of the competition at all when starting out],” is his immediate reply. “I just wanted to do it. I didn’t think from the music industry or any scene or any community’s POV. I have only done things from my POV. And I always wanted to create music, and I did that, and I will continue to do that… So that’s it. For the rest, if there’s competition, so be it. Tumhe mein layak lagta hun toh mujhe suno, tumhe main nalayak lagta hu toh tum batao, main kaam karunga khud pe. Sunake toh rahunga [If you think I’m worthy, then listen to my music. If you think I’m not worthy, then tell me, I will work on myself. But I will make you listen to my music],” he reaffirms with a smile.
