Featured on today’s Beat Drop is “Pokito”, a collaboration between Diljit Dosanjh and Daddy Yankee. The track released on October 30, the day Dosanjh begins the India leg of his AURA tour with a show at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. It appears on Daddy Yankee’s album La Postal. The album also includes features from Cardi B (on “COSITA”), De La Rose (on “ENAWO”), and more.
“Pokito” adds to the Punjabi artist’s growing list of international team-ups: including “Ranjha” with Sia and David Guetta, “Señorita” with J Balvin, “Muhammad Ali” with NLE Choppa, “Khutti” with Saweetie and “Hass Hass” with Sia.
The music video for “Pokito” plays on the two artists’ worlds: the Spanish-Punjabi hybrid track’s visuals have bhangra in a bodega and cricket meeting baseball, all set to a high-tempo beat, apt for the energetic cultural crossover.
As for the music, “Pokito” draws on one of Punjabi music’s most familiar sonic signatures – the Tumbi. A stripped-back, bass-heavy beat gives the track a solid rhythmic backbone, while both artists bring the vocal character they’re known for: Diljit’s unmistakable Punjabi inflection and Daddy Yankee’s distinct Puerto Rican reggaeton flow.
