Today’s Beat Drop features “Mahiya”, the first recorded collaboration between Badshah and Shreya Ghoshal. Released on November 4, the romantic single brings together the rapper’s urban pop production and Ghoshal’s melodic vocals. The two previously shared the judges’ panel on Indian Idol. The music video features model and actor Avneet Kaur.
Production on the track is handled by Hiten, a longtime Badshah collaborator whose first release with the rapper was 2020’s “Awaara”, featuring Reet Talwar. Since then, Hiten has become a regular presence in Badshah’s catalogue.
Ghoshal has been exploring independent music with recent releases including “Bairi Piya”, composed by Anurag Mishra, and her appearance alongside ARJN, KDS and FIFTY4 on the remix of MVR’s Malayalam hip-hop track “Kalyani”.
The Badshah collaboration brings her into another musical pairing with an artist from outside the conventional film-music circuit. “Mahiya” is built around an upbeat pop arrangement, alternating between Badshah’s rhythmic delivery and Ghoshal’s more expansive vocal performance.
